As an honest roofer, nothing bothers us more than the scam artists who seem to infiltrate Florida after every storm. Now they’re coming virtually too. Just like those phone calls you get about your expired car warranty; these companies are after a quick buck. Here are some of the latest roofing scams we’re seeing.
The Postcard Mailer
You receive a postcard with a picture of a home that is obviously yours and taken from above. We’ve seen a few headlines including:
- Our satellite noticed you need a new roof – call today for a free quote. We don’t even need to come to your house.
- We see storm damage on your roof! You are entitled to a free roof with our government sponsored program.
- This image came from our drone and we can see that you have substantial roof damage, contact us today before your end up with water inside your home.
Of course, the wording varies but you get the idea. None of these are true.
The Pop-Up Ad
Whether it’s on social media or while you’re doing a legitimate search for a roofing company on a search engine, you see an ad. The ad may read:
- We beat any roofing estimate!
- New roofing technology will save you thousands!
- You’re eligible for a free roof!
Some may argue that the first two aren’t scams but rather untruths. The third one is a lie and illegal.
Here’s the Truth About All These Roofing Scams, Lies & Untruths
Just like the old adage about there’s no such thing as a free lunch, free roofs don’t exist either. Even if you have storm damage and your insurance company has agreed you need a roof replacement, you must pay your deductible. Any roofer offering to pay it for you is breaking the law.
Some companies do offer to beat any roofing estimate; however, you have to ask yourself where they’re saving the money. Are they taking a shortcut that will shorten the life of your roof? Are they using inferior materials? Do their installers have proper training? What about insurance? Do they offer aa warranty? All of these factors influence the price of your roof replacement. Is saving a few hundred dollars’ worth the risk?
No roofing company has a satellite. It’s illegal to fly a drone over someone’s property without their permission. The postcard image likely came from Google. It’s pretty cheap to send out mailers and even if a roofer gets a few calls and two sales from their solicitation, they’ve more than profited. There’s no new government program. A new roof may save you on heating and cooling but not thousands.
