We’ve talked and stressed the importance of many of the elements of your roofing system as they really do all work together, but we’ve not really addressed your soffits and fascia. Both do important jobs and shouldn’t be neglected.
What are They?
If you walk around your home and look up under the eaves, you’ll see what appears to be metal or plastic venting. Those are your soffits. Fascia is often a wood or wood composite that runs along the edge of your roof and hides the rafters. It connects your siding to your roof and usually is where gutters are attached.
What do They Do?
Both soffits and fascia provide attic security in that they keep flying pests and crawling ones out of your attic. However, that’s not their main purpose. Your soffits main job is to allow air into your roof so that heat and humidity don’t build up inside. They work together with your box, ridge or other type of exhaust vents in your roof near the peak which release the hot air.
Your fascia may also have venting depending on the style of your home and its roofline, however, more often than not, it’s there to support the last few rows of shingles and hide the end of the rafters. It also is what your gutters attach to.
Maintenance and Repair
Your soffits rarely need much maintenance or repair, but you should check them from time to time to make sure they’re not cracked or split which can give pests a way into your attic. When you’re in your attic, make sure your insulation isn’t covering the soffits because you want them to allow for airflow.
Fascia requires much more maintenance and care. You’ll want to check it regularly. When you notice peeling paint, cracks or bubbling in the surface, you are seeing the first signs of water damage. You will want to have your fascia replaced if you notice any of these things. Keeping your gutters clean can help cut down on rotting fascia.
The elements of your roofing system do work together to protect your home from weather, pests, and decay. Keeping your soffits and fascia in good condition takes regular visual inspections by the homeowner and annual inspections by a professional roofing contractor.
