We wish that all the community building companies actually put gutters on the homes they build as a standard feature, but few do. Gutters are an important part of your roofing system. Without them, your home is more likely to experience erosion around it which can lead to foundation issues. Properly functioning gutters are just as important. A clogged gutter can do more damage than no gutters at all. Here is why we recommend every home have a properly functioning gutter system.
Gutters Protect Your Home
When you look at a home without gutters in a heavy rain, the water runs down the slope to the ground beneath. When we have several days of sustained rain, that water has no where to go. It may slowly seep into the ground. As it does, it will soften the stand and dirt beneath your foundation which is one of the main causes of foundation issues. Once the dirt is supersaturated and can no longer soak into the ground, it will become standing water often in a trough around your home. That standing water attracts bugs and as Floridians we know that means mosquitos. A properly installed gutter system will allow the water to run from your roof away from your home’s foundation. You won’t have water building up around your home and this will lessen the chance of creating mosquito habitats.
Your Gutter System is Part of Your Roofing System
Your roofing system does a big job, especially in Florida. It should keep you safe and dry even in the worst storms and it can help your home stay cooler. Your roofing system is more than just the shingles, metal or tile you see on top of your roof, it includes:
- Shingles, Wood, Tile or Metal Roofing
When you have clogged gutters, you end up with many issues. First, the standing water is another place mosquitos will breed. However, that’s not the worst problem. As rain falls again, the water runs over both the front and the back of the gutters. When it runs over the front, you end up with the same issues as if you had no gutters at all. Water going behind the gutters damages the fascia which can lead to water in your walls and attic which can cost thousands to repair. If there’s enough standing water that your shingles sit in the water, they’re going to be damaged and require replacing and you could end up with a roof leak along the edge of your roof which can also be costly.
If you have a gutter system in place, keep it clean either with gutter covers or regular cleanings. If yours are clogged, get them cleaned and have your roofer inspect for damage. Water damage along the edge of the home is especially dangerous because it takes a long time to show itself in the home. Call Suncoast Roofing Solutions today if you think you have roof damage.
