If your have missing or misaligned shingles and a relatively new roof, you might have a problem all over. Frequently less than experienced or sloppy roofers overdrive the nails into the shingles by using too much air pressure in their nail guns. This problem leads to large or frequent roof repair needs.
Proper Shingle Installation
Although most roofers install their shingles per manufacturer recommendations, there are exceptions. When a roofer rushes, uses day laborers or subcontractors, or just doesn’t pay attention to the details, you end up with a poor roof installation. Proper installation means adjusting the nail gun’s air pressure to the current temperature and hitting the shingles at the appropriate place the prescribed number of times. When either the air pressure is too high or there aren’t enough nails in the strip of shingles, problems occur.
Wind Damage or Installation Issue
Although you’re more likely to see misaligned or missing shingles after a wind event, it can happen anytime. One of the worst things to hear from your insurance adjustor is that the damage may have shown itself after a wind storm but it’s not due to the wind because of the improper installation. Wind damage more likely shows itself on the side of the roof that was directly impacted by the wind. Installation issues can be seen all over the roof’s surface.
Improper Installation Leads to Early Roof Replacements
Although it’s possible that only a small portion of your roof wasn’t properly installed, it’s more likely that the issue is with your entire roof. When a roof isn’t installed properly, you will end up needing a roof replacement as much as 15 years before the expected end of life of a roof. Hire a licensed roofing contractor who wasn’t involved in the installation. Ask them what they see and if the problem can be fixed with a roof repair or if it’s more substantial.
