Everyone needs a roof on their home and everyone wants to save money on their heating and cooling costs. Recently there has been some confusion about some of the new solar roofing tile technology. As one of the more experienced Tampa roofing contractors, here are the myths we’re hearing and the facts you need to know.
Myth 1 – Solar Roofing Tiles are Actually Cheaper Than a Normal Roof
This is completely false and based on some interesting math. One of our recent quotes for a high quality clay tile roof was $45,000. If you want the same roof covered with these new solar tiles, it would cost you $142,000! So where is this company getting their math? They’re spreading the cost over 30 years. There are some tax credits and you will save money on your power bill but we can’t imagine that you’ll save the equivalent of over $3,000 each year.
Myth 2 – You Get a Large Tax Credit
Currently the ITC (investment tax credit) is 30%, however, you can’t get back more than you paid in taxes. Keep in mind this will decrease between now and 2021. The credit does roll over but your roof solar system has to be installed and operational before you can claim the credit. Current projections are that the solar roof tiles will start shipping in 2018, leaving you two years to claim the 30% credit and just four years to claim the entire credit.
Myth 3 – You Can Live Off the Grid
Although the future of solar and the goal of many who invest in this technology is to live without relying on the power company. What you have to keep in mind is that even with a solar wall, which is not yet available, is it can only store a finite amount of electricity. Once you use that up, you live without power until the sun starts providing you with the electricity you need. It’s great in concept but yet unproven technology.
Tampa roofing contractors aren’t threatened by this technology because they will still be the ones installing it. In fact, many roofers Tampa homeowners call are well versed in solar technology and help homeowners evaluate the state of their current roof for solar panel installations. We’re not saying that in the future solar roofing tiles won’t be the right choice for your home, we just don’t believe they are proven technology at this point and too much misinformation is floating around.
