Spring is here and, in Tampa, that means hot days are not far behind. If you’re looking for ways to increase the energy efficiency of your home, start with your roof. It’s your home’s first line of defense against the elements, including heat. Here are some ways we can help you improve the energy efficiency of your roof.
We’ve been inside many attics while inspecting, repairing and replacing roofs. Commercial builders are notorious for taking short cuts when it’s time to insulate the attic. That means your home may benefit with the simple addition of insulation. And, if you live in a home built before 1982, you’re not up to todays code for insulation. Here is a great site that can help you determine if you would benefit from additional insulation.
New Energy Efficient Roofing
If it’s time for a new roof for your home, consider one of the ENERGY STAR® certified roofing materials. GAF offers a line of Timberline® CS shingles that can reduce your cooling costs by up to 15% according to the Cool Roof Rating Council.
Tile roofing is another great option. Tile roofing’s design and installation gives your home a natural layer of insulation and ventilation. This leads to less heat transference directly to your roof deck – as much as 70% less – and therefore less into your home. You’ll find that when you choose a light-colored tile roof, you’ll significantly reduce your monthly energy bills over a dark asphalt roof.
Tile Roof Coating
If you have a tile roof and its dark colored, consider a tile roof coating in a lighter shade. Much like putting on a light-colored shirt on a sunny day rather than a dark one, your roof won’t get as hot. The greater the reflectivity of your roofing material, the cooler your home will stay naturally.
Proper Roof Maintenance
When your roofing company provides regular roofing inspections, maintenance and takes care of minor issues before they become big problems, you don’t end up with roof leaks that damage insulation. Once your insulation gets wet, it can no longer do its job and you end up with a less energy efficient home.
