Do you have dark streaks on your roof? You may think it’s just an eyesore, but it’s really much more than just unsightly. In fact, if it’s Gloecapsa Magma, a blue-green alga, it’s literally eating away at your shingles.
Why Roofs Become Streaked
The lighter the color shingle, the more noticeable, but most older roofs have alga growing on it. It’s common in our warm and humid climate, especially on homes with shade on the roof. Sometimes the algae starts on the stucco exterior of the home and moves up to the roof while other times it’s only on the roof. Either way, the algae is thriving on the organic matter in the asphalt shingles.
What You Can Do About It
Depending on the age of your roof and its condition, sometimes the best solution is a new roof. If you want (or need due to HOA regulations) to replace it with an asphalt roof, many newer shingle brands have algae resistant roof shingles. One example is GAF’s Timberline Ultra HD™ Shingle with StainGuard Plus™. Another option is to install tile roofing on your home. Although tile can become stained and streaked, the algae doesn’t eat away at concrete tile roofing like it does on an asphalt shingle.
You can also clean your shingles. A simple solution of a mixture of 50% water and 50% bleach sprayed on the roof and allowed to dry will kill the algae. You should rinse the roof after it dries but be sure to protect your plants from the bleach mixture. If you’re not comfortable cleaning it yourself, call a roofing company and ask if they clean roofs.
