Without fail we perform countless roof repair calls in December and January. The vast majority are because of self-inflicted roofing damage from hanging holiday decorations. If you’re planning on Griswolding out your home this year, please, take these few bits of advice before you start your decorating.
Understand the Risks of Walking on Your Roof
Walking on any roofing material comes with risks. Walk on a tile roof incorrectly and you’ll crack your tiles. You can displace the granules from an asphalt roof if you walk on it in the wrong shoes or the wrong way. Metal roofing is pretty durable; however, it can be dented. It’s also slippery which may lead to your hurting yourself. No holiday decorations are worth a trip to the ER.
Never Nail Anything into Your Roofing System
Chances are good that you’re going to take down whatever you’ve nailed up once the holiday season is over. That means you’re leaving a hole in your roof which may mean a roof leak in the near future. We also end up repairing fascia board that people hang wreaths and other holiday decorations from. Those little holes may not seem like a big deal but they can lead to damage.
Only Hang Light Clips from Your Gutters
Although some light clip manufacturers say their light clips are safe for shingles, we never recommend it. That’s because the simple act of sliding anything onto the shingle can displace granules. Without the granules the shingle will deteriorate more quickly, especially in the Florida sun. The risk from attaching light clips to tile roofing is that you may end up damaging the bird stop. Take our advice and just stick the clips on the gutters.
Don’t Risk Your Roofing or Your Safety for Some Decorations
In addition to roof damage, there’s also plenty of room for you to hurt yourself by falling from your roof while hanging holiday decorations. Play it safe, decorate your yard and only attach lights to the gutters. If you do find that you’ve damaged your roofing system, call Suncoast Roofing Solutions at (813) 283-2544. Of course, if you want a new roof for Christmas, we off free roof replacement quotes too.
