If you’ve talked to a tile roofing company about a roof replacement and previously had asphalt shingles, you may be overwhelmed by the tile roofing types that are available. We thought we’d give you a good overview of the types of tile styles to get you started.
In a previous blog we referenced clay and cement tile roofing but in this blog we’re going to discuss the shapes or profiles tiles come in. There are two types of roofing tile, interlocking and overlapping. Interlocking tiles lock together before being affixed to the roofing deck. Overlapping tiles overlap one another before being nailed down. The profile or shape and brand of tile you choose will generally dictate the whether you have interlocking or overlapping tiles.
- Flat Tiles – These are almost always laid in overlapping rows. Some flat roofing tiles are made to emulate wood or slate.
- Mission Style – Also known as barrel tiles because they look like half a barrel. When many people think of tile roofing, they often think of this style.
- Spanish or S-Style – This is popular choice in tile roofing in Tampa, especially on the more traditional looking homes. It has a rounded appearance but not as high a profile as the Mission style and looks like an ‘S’. These are almost always overlapping tiles.
- Double Roman – When you watch movies reenacting the roman era, you will see this type of tile. It has a low profile and a wavy look to it. Some manufactures call this style a curved tile.
As there are many different tile roofing companies manufacturing clay and concrete roofing tiles, you will find different names but overall, they will be one of the styles above. Choosing the right profile tile for you home will depend on the look you want to achieve, the pitch of your roof, and the style of your home.
