What Are the Differences?
Clay and concrete roofing tiles have more similarities than differences. This fact surprises a lot of homeowners looking at a tile roof replacement. Let’s first look at the similarities and then explain their differences.
Although some brands may not have all these similarities, when you look at quality brands and styles of roofing tiles, all have the following:
- Class A fire resistance
- Wind rating up to at least 130mph when properly installed
- Impact resistant
- Provide higher resale value than asphalt shingles
Of course, the biggest difference is what they’re made out of, which leads to the next significant difference, their weight. A concrete tile roof can weigh as much as 25% less than a clay tile roof. This makes a difference when you’re replacing an asphalt roof with tile. You may not need additional support if you choose concrete roofing tiles.
Another difference is life expectancy. Although both should be the last roof you ever put on your home, clay tile, when properly installed, will last longer than concrete tile. That’s because it’s less porous and won’t absorb as much water over time.
Cost is a big factor to consider. When we’re comparing products of similar quality, clay roofing tiles will cost more. There are two reasons, they’re more expensive to manufacture and they’re more expensive to install. This is because they’re so much heavier than a concrete tile.
What’s the Right Option?
The right options is ultimately the product you prefer. Both are durable, look great and will protect your home for decades when properly maintained. The key is choosing quality products and hiring an experienced tile roofing company. Not just any roofing company, but one with the knowledge and experience installing tile roofing. You want your roof to look great so you want a company who will take the time to lay it properly to install it.
