As you may have noticed, we sell many brands and types of roofing. That’s because we know there’s no one right roofing material for every customer. Different roofing materials, brands and styles have different benefits.
We’re going to spend the next few weeks looking at how you may want to choose the right material for your home. Later in the month we’ll talk about brands. Today’s blog will look at choosing the right material based on cost from the perspective of an experienced roofer.
Roofing Material Costs
Both materials and installation vary from product to product. If you’re looking at price as a main factor, here is a list of the cheapest to most expensive as far as materials go:
- Three-tab asphalt shingles
- Architectural shingles
- Designer shingles
- Cedar shingles (aka wood shake)
- Metal roofing
- Concrete tile roofing
- Clay tile roofing
Some metal roofing may be more expensive than some tile roofing and some designer shingles can cost more than some metal roofing but what you see above is most common as far as material costs go.
First, always talk to an experienced roofer for installation. If you want your roof installed properly, your roofer needs the training and experience to do it right, no matter what type of roofing you choose. Some roofers are experts in only asphalt while others are masters at tile. Some larger roofers have experienced crews in different roofing materials. Before you sign any contract, make sure the roofer you’re hiring is an experienced roofer in the material you choose.
As for pricing, it’s easier and faster to install a strip of shingles than individual tiles. That means that tile roofing and cedar shakes are more expensive than any type of asphalt shingle. Most asphalt shingles cost about the same when it comes to installation. Metal roofing varies based on the style you choose.
