You may think that you don’t need insulation in your attic or that it doesn’t matter much because it doesn’t get very cold here in Florida. However, attic insulation does much more than just protect against cold. If you don’t have the right amount of insulation in your attic, you could be wasting electricity.
What Insulation Does in Your Attic
Although the first thing most people think of when it comes to insulation is keeping the cold air out of their home. However, it has three purposes other than just keeping the cold air out.
- Keeps the warm air out of your home – Proper attic insulation can save you on cooling costs in the summer. Hot air always tries to move to cooler areas which means from your attic into your home. With the right amount of insulation this heat transference can be reduced.
- Prevents moisture from reaching your attic – Whether you’re cooking, taking a shower, doing laundry or just living in your home, there is moisture in it. If you don’t have good insulation between your home and attic, that moisture will rise into your attic and can lead to mold, mildew and roof rot.
- Helps your roofing material last longer – We’ve expressed this point in many blogs and in countless conversations. The key to a healthy roof is proper installation, insulation and ventilation. Anytime one of those is off, your roof will suffer.
Checking Insulation Levels
Recommended levels of attic insulation has changed over the years. If your home was built before the mid-80’s you likely don’t have the right amount of insulation. We’ve also found that many homes built during the building boom in the late 90’s and early 2000’s don’t have the right amount just because the builders skimped to save money. If you want to figure out if you have the right amount, you can either check this link or ask your roofing company to check it.
While your measuring yours, also make sure that there are no signs that it was ever wet – compression and discoloration in one area are a sure sign there’s been water damage, as that are will need to be completely replaced. If the roof wasn’t repaired, ask your roofing company to check for a roof leak.
